Key features and benefits for D3
The Volvo Penta D3 is a refined version of a proven, renowned engine concept. This strong, solid and robust engine delivers excellent reliability, maximal uptime and long service life.
The engine is ultra-compact for its swept volume and fully symmetrical, making it very easy to install. Aluminum cylinder block and cylinder head gives the engine extremely low weight for its power output.
The unique marine torque of the Volvo Penta diesel engines stands out among the competition by offering increased load-carrying capability, rapid acceleration, and the ability to maintain a high cruising speed, irrespective of load or sea state.
The high-tech fuel injection system helps make the engine highly fuel efficient. The control unit monitors several parameters which reduces the overall fuel consumption.
Volvo Penta offers two type-approved systems for on-board electronic control. Electronic Vessel Control fully integrates the engines, electronics and a range of optional features. Marine Commercial Control System is an open system that is easily integrated into the ship’s control system.
The engine is fitted with freshwater cooling as standard. This reduces internal corrosion and enables the engine to maintain a consistent and optimal working temperature under all conditions.

The Classic is now around the corner: March 18th-19th 2023! Thwaites Marine is once again a proud sponsor for this event! Organised by the Coffs Harbour Bluewater Freedivers Club, the Australian Bluewater Freedivers Classic minimises the pressure on the local fish community by running in a stretch of coast of 300 km, between Evans Head in the north, to South West rocks in the south. There is a list of target species that includes mostly fast-growing pelagic species that are not territorial. The limit amount of fish allowed to be weighed in is only 5. This promotes a more thoughtful diving, curbing the style of fishing competitions in Australia towards more sustainable style, that can be enjoyed long into the future.
